It was quite the afternoon for Sleepy Hollow Fire Chief John Korzelius when he crawled out onto a lake to rescue a deer stranded on a frozen lake in Pocantico Hills.

The department received the call about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday about a wobbly deer who was slipping and sliding on the ice trying to get to back to land. Sleepy Hollow firefighters, along with Pocantico Hills firefighters were able to rescue the deer by tying ropes around Korzelius, a video of the rescue shows.

The chief then made the long crawl out to the frightened deer, maneuvered to grab the deer without getting kicked in the head or face, and then be pulled back to shore.

Korzelius managed to grab the deer by the leg and then fellow firefighters pulled them back to shore where they helped the stunned and frozen deer onto land.

After laying on the ground for a couple of minutes, firefighters helped the deer get up, and then on wobbly legs, it made his way into the woods of the into the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.and disappeared.
